Note:

Dr. Thomas Kochumuttom, CMI, wrote these four-line lyrics as a chant before the proclamation of the Gospel in the “Indian Liturgy” at Dharmaram College, Bengaluru, in the early 1970s. Fr. Thomas Kandathil, CMI (1942-2012), composed it in Mohana ragam and taught me. I used to be a regular participant in the Indian liturgy and used to sing this chant. Later we sang this and other chants onto a cassette recorder for non-commercial dissemination. In 1978, I decided to use this chant for the opening track in the LP record of Christian Bhajans. Fr. Kochumuttam compressed the gist of Indian philosophy in these four lines: knowledge (Vidya) as the supreme goal of the human search for the ultimate reality, “awidya” (lack of knowledge) as darkness that should be destroyed, and the search for the divine light that will abolish darkness. All in all, it sounded like an appropriate invocation for an LP of Christian Bhajans. Prof. Pratapkumar J. Toliya made the music arrangement and supervised the recording at the H. M. V. studio at Gemini, Chennai. The famous sound engineer, Raghunathan, did the recording.

This is one of the tracks in the LP that got attention from the listeners in Kerala. For example, the Sacred Heart College at Thevara, Ernakulam, used to play this bhajan on their public address system before the morning session began.

We dedicate this track to the memory of Fr. Thomas Kandathil, CMI.
